about

Timber began as an improvising duo of Rick Brown and Mark Howell. [Among our first times playing together in public were a pair of gigs as a trio with John Zorn.] But Mark and I both wanted to make songs, too - and sing! Then we got somebody who could _really_ sing to join us: the wonderful and much-missed Faye Hunter (RIP), who played bass, co-wrote some songs and sang with us for about a year before moving home to North Carolina. Happily, we met Jenny Wade who joined us in this 'eclectic' experimental rock trio. We tried everything! We played a bunch of local gigs, toured a bit and made _Parts and Labor_, stuffing it to the brim with perhaps too much of the "everything" we were trying...

I'm not quite sure how Mark met Bruce Hathaway (RIP) but he turned out to be a great help to us in getting this thing made with a variety of peculiar and, um, cost-effective techniques. We recorded a bit in my parents' garage in NJ, "live" at CBGB, and in Astoria, Queens in the 2nd floor apartment "studio" of Werner Petrikat (I think his was the least expensive 8-track recording situation we found in the Village Voice classifieds.)

There were some fruitful times - touring, recording and local gigging after the album release but Timber didn't last much longer.

After Jenny moved away and before Mark did, too, he and I worked on a duo we called Inconvenient Music. Some of that music may be uncovered around here in coming months... I can't seem to get it to play but there's a MySpace (!!) page out there, too!

Recently, Mark has done some recording with fellow guitarist Nick Didkovsky. Here's more about that: www.punosmusic.com/didkovskyhowell/
